A Charity Worth Knowing: The Doe Fund
September 20, 2013
The Doe Fund, a New York City based non-profit, works around the clock to develop and implement cost-effective, holistic programs that meet the needs of a diverse population working to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction and criminal recidivism. The organization, which was founded by George T. McDonald, is best known for its award winning program Ready, Willing & Able, which puts thousands of men to work in its signature blue uniforms throughout the city, helping to keep more than 150 miles of NYC streets clean and green each day as a transitional employment program. The program offers homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals transitional work and housing, along with case management, life skills, educational assistance, occupational training and more. Joonbug recently took a trip to their headquarters in Brooklyn to take a tour of their facilities and find out what The Doe Fund is all about.
This amazing organization takes in the homeless and those fresh out of prison (all of whom have been referred to them), and not only gives them a place to live, but teaches them the skills they need in order to lead a productive and successful life. With regular drug tests, the organization ensures that all its Doe Funders are sober. The Doe Fund caters to each person’s specific needs – whether they are working to obtain their GED, take parenthood classes, or learn computer skills.
Their Brooklyn facilities are unlike anything you’d expect to see — holding 700 beds for those in the program, a kitchen, gym, library, classrooms and more, it is a sight to behold. We wouldn’t mind living there! Doe Funders are ncouraged to participate in extra-curicular activities such as photography, cooking, music and even horseback riding. And although The Doe Fund’s Ready, Willing & Able program is their most well-known, it is not the only service they provide. They also have a veterans program, which offers similar services for homeless veterans and even a youth program. The Doe Fund’s programs serve more than 1,000 individuals each and every day. The program, which lasts nine months, allows those participants to graduate from their program with a degree, gets them back on their feet, a steady job and housing. All this in less than a year–it’s nothing short of remarkable. And their formula works: having been around since 1985, The Doe Fund has grown rapidly and improved the lives of countless individuals. Another outstanding quality of those involved with The Doe Fund is their dedication and enthusiasm – it will surely rub off on you.
Looking to get involved? The Doe Fund will be holding their annual gala at Cipriani 42nd Street on Thursday, October 24th, from 6-8pm. Notable attendees in the past have included Ethan Hawke, Steve Madden, and Michael Bloomberg. Tickets and more information on the gala can be found here.
