How To Keep Hair From Fading In The Summer Sun & Salt Water — Expert Tips
Summer is fantastic for short shorts and crop tops, but so awful for your hair, especially if you’re a blonde! Between the hot sun, chlorine and salt water, you can kiss any color and moisture goodbye! Luckily, we have some master tips to help you bring your golden fringe back to life!
The sun, sand, wind, and water in the summer can make your hair brittle, frizzy, dry and totally drain out all the color, especially for blondes or those with blonde highlights. There’s truly nothing worse than chlorine turning your blonde locks into a green shade and absolutely destroying your perfect golden hair. Master Colorist Joanna Pinto from Pierre Michel Salon in New York City shares her amazing tips on how to get the perfect summer blonde AND keeping the color from fading or drying out!
Master Colorist Joanna Pinto tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY, “The consultation is the most important step in the whole process. Clearly explaining to your colorist what your goal is and bringing pictures is key. With Leilah [Fuller] we used an ash blonde base color and I did a combination of honey and beige blonde highlights concentrating the lighter highlights around the face, to brighten her up.”
WHAT IS THE COLOR FOR SUMMER 2017?
“Highlight trends have changed a lot. Natural looking is better. If you are getting a highlight to the root, fine thin slices intermixed with a thin weave is great. If you are looking to get a highlight where the blonde is more concentrated on the ends; a sombre, is a great natural look and is very low maintenance.”
IF YOU’RE GOING FROM DARK IN THE WINTER TO LIGHT FOR SPRING/SUMMER, HOW SHOULD YOU GO ABOUT IT? IS IT HEALTHY FOR YOUR HAIR?
“Changing your hair color with the seasons is not healthy for the overall hair but slight changes are absolutely ok. It’s up to the colorist to analyze the hair and see if it’s strong enough to undergo the change. I would definitely do it gradually so that you aren’t over processing the hair. No hair color is worth compromising the integrity of the hair.”
HOW DO YOU MAKE SUMMER COLOR LAST, WHEN YOU’RE IN THE POOL, OCEAN & SUN?
“Conditioning treatments are a must when you have highlights, especially in the summer when your hair is exposed to more sun, chlorine and saltwater. I tell clients that it is important for them to hydrate their hair with a hair mask like Moroccan Oil, if possible once a week especially the summer months.”
